Ice Skating Rinks Stay Busy Despite Unusually Warm Temperatures

Tuesday is December 1st, but it's definitely not feeling like a normal December outside.

“72 degrees - we're not complaining, we're just thankful Bixby has an ice rink," said Bixby’s Winter Wonderland Operator, Josh Nave.

Bixby's Winter Wonderland is now in its 5th year and with our above-average temperatures this week, some are ice skating in short sleeves!

When asked if it felt weird to ice skate in a t-shirt, 7-year-old Gabby North replied, “Well kind of because it's supposed to be Christmas, not like summer, so yeah it kind of does!”

Gabby North says she's been coming here since she was two and now she's 7, so you do the math! And Gabby says her favorite part?

"It's kind of like the speed and the tricks and the spins," said Gabby.

And Gabby tells us she even taught herself!

Gabby is one of many kids lacing up their skates and enjoying the ice rink.

Josh Nave is one of the operators of Bixby's Winter Wonderland and says even on these warm days, the most melting you'll see is slight ponding from the sun hitting the ice.

He says the rink stays cold because "The Chiller" pumps a glycol-like chemical compound through the piping underneath that keeps the ice cold.

"It leaves that chiller machine at about 6 degrees goes through the pipes and it comes back at about 12 degrees," said Nave.

Even with a little melting, it isn’t cooling down the fun of getting out on the ice, and getting into the holiday spirit.

"The kids just eat it up! I mean they're out here in short sleeves and they're getting wet falling down and they're having a great time," said Nave.

Bixby's Winter Wonderland is open from 5:30 to 9 during the week and from 2 to 9 on weekends.

They also have a big month packed with tons of events, starting with Lights on Bixby this Saturday, December 4th.

The Broken Arrow Ice Rink in the Rose District is open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily and Arvest Winterfest Downtown has open skating from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.
