Help For Victims Of Human Trafficking In Muskogee

A Green Country non-profit is fighting back against human trafficking by helping heal some of the most vulnerable.

A place called RISE in Muskogee is giving young girls a safe place to call home.

RISE stands for Restoring Identities after Sexual Exploitation, it's a safe, secure long term home for girls who have been victims of sex trafficking or commercial sexual exploitation.

RISE opened in Muskogee a year ago and so far has helped 10 girls between 13 and 18 years old, most of them from Oklahoma.

Right now, there are six girls living at the home, which provides them everything they need to live, including their own room for free.

The founder and executive director, Keri Spencer says the girls come in feeling they have no self-worth, they're afraid, but grateful for the safe home.

Spencer says she would like add 6 more rooms.

"I just want to help as many as we can because there are a lot of them out there and we don't want any of them to slip through the cracks and not get what they need to be recovered from the things that they've gone through and be restored and be able to be who they were meant to be." said Keri Spencer.

Spencer says raising awareness about human trafficking is important because so many people don't realize it's happening in our own neighborhoods.
